Rotogravure Printing

Segapac offer Rotogravure printing. Rotogravure is an intaglio printing process that is commonly used for printing packaging materials.

What is Rotogravure Printing?

The rotogravure printing process is different from digital printing. Unlike toner in digital printing, an image is directly engraved onto the paper, box, or packaging in rotogravure printing. Rotogravure is a relief print process that uses an engraved, often metal, print plate to transfer a design by rolling through ink and onto the printing surface. In packaging, rotogravure printing is used most often to print on thin, flexible material like a stand-up pouch, film roll stock and so on.

What are the advantages of Rotogravure Printing?

  • Large quantities can be printed cost effectively
  • The more you print, the cheaper the price per piece becomes
  • A larger variety of material structure types with custom finishes can be used
  • Special custom inks such as metallic and Pantone colors are available
  • Highest possible printing quality, with greater detail and color fidelity

Flexographic Printing

Our printing capability includes rotogravure up to 11 colors and flexography up to 10 colors. Substrates generally include PE, BOPP, CPP, PET, nylon, foil, paper and many more.

Segapac can offer  have two types of printing presses used for flexographic printing. These are the stack type and central impression cylinder (CIC). Both types employ a plate cylinder, a metering cylinder known as the anilox roll that applies ink to the plate, and an ink pan. Some presses use a third roller as a fountain roll and, in some cases, a doctor blade for improved ink distribution.

Laminating

Our laminating capability includes solvent, solvent-less and extrusion.

Segapac is able to laminate a wide range of substrates to provide the best available packaging format.

Laminates available provide excellent print clarity, trapped print eliminating scuff, and excellent strength and barrier properties.

Converting

Our Converting capabilities are across most forms of polyethylene bags and a range of pouch formats

Pouch conversion includes 3-side seal, stand up and quad style, all formats with/without zippers.

Polyethylene conversion includes wicket bread & produce bags and many other types through to large bags and sacks.

The Process

The conversion department is just that - it takes the flexible film and converts the film into bags or pouches. The film used can be plain or printed, it can be single substrate or a complex laminate, to suit the end application.

Side weld - Sideweld bags are produced by sealing and cutting the sides of the bag using a wedge shaped sealing bar. A common example of sideweld bags are bread bags. These can be supplied as loose bags or on wickets.

Bottom seal - Bottom seal bags are formed when a tubular film is cut and sealed, with the sealed end being the bottom of the bags only leaving the unsealed top open for filling and subsequent sealing by the packer.

Pouch seal - The pouch sealing process is where the converting machine can apply flat seals to the sides, the top and or the bottom of the bag. It can also include feeding in special products which allow for zipper opening and closing, for example. Please refer to our section on pouches.

Slitting

Our slitting capabilities include all substrates from very narrow rolls to large rolls.

Slitting is the process, typically after printing or laminating, where a large roll of film is broken down into either narrow width and/or small roll diameters. The material is either slit or sheer cut into the correct width, and then rolled up either on cores using a centre driven shaft or cores that lay on roller, ie surface driven.

These machines control the film with web guides and tension control devices to produce flat rolls for the end user. Shown here is a typical centre driven slitter machine in operation

Digital Printing

What is digital printing?

Digital printing does not use printing plates like Rotogravure printing, but instead, it uses a toner like used in laser printers or other large printers that uses liquid ink for printing. Digital printing takes an edge over Rotogravure printing when smaller quantities of bags are needed, for example, a food manufacturer who has 50 or 100 business packaging printing items and needs just minimal bags of each. The other added benefit of digital printing over Rotogravure printing is that it uses variable data. When there is a need that each piece needs a unique code, address and name digital printing is the perfect choice to go with. While Rotogravure printing does not have this capability to accommodate this need.

While there is no doubt that Rotogravure printing is more economical per each bag, we still can’t deny the fact that many businesses do not need large runs of 10,000 or more per each SKU, and for them, the best solution is digital printing.

Digital printing enables brands of all sizes to go to market faster, rapidly make changes, and order low to medium quantities to demand with photo-quality graphics. Small and medium-sized businesses are able to launch products with the same professional packaging as global brands do

What makes digital print different?

Digital Print

10-15 business days time to ship

Low minimum runs

Low inventory levels

Low obsolescence

No plate or set up fees

Conventional

6-12 weeks time to ship

Higher minimum runs

Higher inventory levels

Higher obsolescence

Plate & waste costs charged

Which one is the right fit for my next project?

Rotogravure and digital are both useful printing methods. Each has particular benefits, depending on your project’s requirements. When you need larger runs of a project, Rotogravure printing is the way to go.

If a smaller run is needed either cause you are having too many SKU’s and can’t print 10,000 of each, or cause you to want to add a new item to your product line but want to try it first with smaller runs, digital printing is your solution. The best part is that as a business, your needs can be met with either of these choices, and the high-level of quality means you get a printed product that will make your productlook great!
